HISTORY — PROFILE OF SHTËPIA E SIGURTË GJAKOVË
Shtëpia e Sigurtë Gjakovë is a shelter for cases of domestic violence and gender-based violence, specifically for mothers and their children. It is one of the first shelters in Kosovo, which began its work in the year 2000 and was officially registered on 07.03.2002. Shtëpia e Sigurtë carries out its activities in the Dukagjin region, specifically in the cities of Gjakova, Malisheva, and Rahovec, without excluding cases from all over Kosovo and abroad.
From the year 2000 until today, the shelter has supported over 1502 cases, most of which have exercised their rights — from the right to a life free from violence to their empowerment. Currently, Shtëpia e Sigurtë has implemented many projects in the areas of prevention, direct support for cases, reintegration, lobbying, and advocacy. It operates as an open-type shelter and helps women with their empowerment and reintegration.
Shtëpia e Sigurtë is part of networks and coalitions, both within and outside the country. It is also part of the “Coordinating Mechanism for Combating Domestic Violence” in the city of Gjakova — an institutionalized mechanism by the Municipal Assembly with participants and actors involved in combating domestic violence in Gjakova and its surroundings (Ministry of Health, the Network for Women’s Economic Empowerment, the “Qeliza” Network, the “Kosovo Women’s Network,” etc.).
The Safe House in Gjakova is licensed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare (MLSW) to provide services for the protection of victims of domestic violence — both children and adults — as it has professional and licensed staff, along with the necessary and adequate infrastructure to carry out this activity.
The work in Shtëpia e Sigurtë is carried out in accordance with the laws, regulations, standards, and manuals that govern this field. Shtëpia e Sigurtë has been part of drafting the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence, the National Strategy and Action Plan for protection from domestic violence, as well as the minimum operating standards, and more.
Shtëpia e Sigurtë cooperates with national and local media to raise awareness about the consequences of domestic violence and violence against women.
